Market potential and consumer acceptance of chitosan bioproducts produced through standardized agro waste fermentation

Emma Johansson

The growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly products has driven the research and development of bioproducts from natural resources. One such promising bioproduct is chitosan, a biopolymer derived from chitin, predominantly found in the exoskeletons of crustaceans. Recent innovations in fungal fermentation processes using agro-industrial waste have provided a more sustainable and cost-effective method for producing chitosan. This research explores the market potential and consumer acceptance of chitosan bioproducts produced through the standardized fermentation of agro-waste. The objective is to assess the feasibility of chitosan production from agro-industrial waste as a renewable resource and its potential for market penetration. The research investigates key factors influencing consumer perception, such as price, quality, environmental sustainability, and health benefits. Consumer surveys and focus group discussions were conducted to evaluate attitudes towards chitosan bioproducts, including their willingness to adopt these products in daily life. The results indicated a positive response towards the eco-friendly nature of chitosan-based products, although there were concerns regarding cost and availability. The research further examines the technical aspects of chitosan production through agro-waste fermentation, including optimization of fermentation parameters, scalability, and the impact of fermentation on the physical properties of chitosan. Findings suggest that while the market potential for chitosan bioproducts is significant, strategies to reduce production costs and increase consumer awareness are critical for widespread adoption. The research concludes that there is a growing opportunity for agro-waste-derived chitosan products to penetrate the health, beauty, and food markets, provided that production processes are standardized and consumer concerns are addressed.
